Structural Determination of High Density, ATRP Grown Polystyrene Brushes by Neutron Reflectivity

چکیده
The development of well-controlled synthetic schemes for growing polymer brushes directly from surfaces has recently enabled very high polymer grafting densities to be explored. Here, we report on the structure of polystyrene brushes as a function of molecular weight. The brushes were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at a high grafting density of 0.44 chains/nm. The dry film thickness scaled linearly with chain molecular weight. Under good solvent conditions, strongly stretched brushes of moderate molecular weight were found to maintain a parabolic density distribution consistent with theoretical predictions. Anomalous behavior was observed for higher molecular weights, suggesting that entanglements are much more pronounced in “grafted from” systems.

Polymer Brush Response to Solvent Flow
The presence of polymer chains grafted or adsorbed onto a surface can dramatically alter the forces that affect interactions between surfaces. The equilibrium properties of such polymer brush systems have been studied for the past two decades, yielding general agreement between theory and experiment. Conversely, the nonequilibrium properties of polymer brushes are still under intense theoretica...

Single crystals of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-b-polystyrene (PS), PEG-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), PEG-b-polycaprolactone (PCL), and polyaniline (PANI)-b-PEG-b-PANI were developed from dilute solutions and thin molten films using self-seeding methodology. The PS and PMMA grafted chains were categorized in disordered nano-brushes; however, the PCL and PANI ones were grouped in ordere...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulations of polystyrene brushes in dry conditions and in toluene solution.
The properties of polystyrene brushes in dry conditions and in toluene solution are studied as a function of grafting density using molecular dynamics simulations. Both, individual brushes and double layers of opposing brushes are considered, the structural properties of which were found to be similar. The density profiles show very pronounced density oscillations which extend up to approximate...

Binary polymer brush patterns were fabricated via photodeprotection of an aminosilane with a photo-cleavable nitrophenyl protecting group. UV exposure of the silane film through a mask yields micrometre-scale amine-terminated regions that can be derivatised to incorporate a bromine initiator to facilitate polymer brush growth via atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP). Atomic force microsc...
